Mmm, pizza good, fandom annoying

First of all, awmp made my new personalized icon. Hand porn! Check out her latest icons here.I took the munchkins out for pizza tonight. It was fun. Came home and watched a little Smallville. I've been watching season two since my sister has the DVDs. I've already seen some of them when they originally aired, but it's easier to follow the plot when you can watch them all in a row without commercial breaks and hiatuses. Yay for DVDs and syndication! So, yeah, I'm feeling the Smallville love. There's just something very charming about it. I'm not sure I want to get fannish about it though. Then I'll feel pressured to feel the Lana hate, and blah blah blah. Sometimes, I really just like enjoying a show without all the fandom drama, you know? It feels like lately, everywhere I go, people are arguing over crap that I could really care less about. I guess since BtVS and AtS are over, people in the fandom need something to get riled up about. I'm not talking about the people on my flist, since ya'll are about the only sane people I can find in fandom lately. It's just that, since the show is over, why do people still feel the need to rag on JM/SMG/Buffy/Spike/Spuffy, or anything else I like? If you don't like these characters, or the show, why are you *still* talking about it? Then again, a lot of these folks are the same ones who complained about the last three seasons of the show, and still wouldn't stop watching and spare us their inane bitching.Basically, fandom's been pissing me off lately, so I'm not too keen on it. Or maybe it's just PMS. Who knows?

I understand and sympathize. I've always wondered why if you dislike something, that you would talk incessently about it. I know I don't care for some things in this world, but I don't focus on it and do post after post about it. Sometimes you think the haters are more obsessed with JM/Spuffy than the lovers are.

Thank you. I'm thoroughly sick of hearing Buffy, Spuffy or SMG bashing. To me there's also a definite misgynoist tinge to that kind of bashing. I've seen the same thing in other fandoms, and I've been in a lot of fandoms over the past 30+ years. It's interesting I never saw any bashing of strong female characters before the backlash against feminism in the 1980's. (much less bizarre blendings of the actress with the character hatred. I note, most Buffy bashers will convolute Sarah with Buffy. It's made me want to stay far far away from any Spike only fans- they are even worse with their extreme Buffy hate as Bangels are with the Spike hate. Both those two also tend to bizarrely blend JM with Spike. The Spike only fans in weird sexually toned fantasies involving themselves with JM, the Bangels in hatred mode blending JM with Spike. But even with those Bangels I haven't seen the wishes for JM violent death I've seen with the Spike only fans toward SMG.) I prefer talking to only Spuffy fans after too many encounters with bashers. I feel like posting a notice- just leave me alone to ship my favorite characters- thank you. That's not just in Buffy fandom either. I'm throughly sick of a certain type of fangirl or fanboy (yeah guys do this too) who makes it their life goal to hate any strong female characters, especially if they are the romantic lead. I mean to put this mindset to the most ridiculous I saw this kind of bashing of Miaka in Fushigi Yuugi fandom and Sakura in Card Captor Sakura. Hearing Miaka or Sakura called a "bitch" by that kind of fan definitely takes the cake.

I'm thoroughly sick of hearing Buffy, Spuffy or SMG bashing. To me there's also a definite misgynist tinge to that kind of bashing.Yeah, I agree that misogyny might play a part in it, but that's not always what it is about. Sometimes, people just happen to really, really hate a character. I've seen too many posts lately about how "if you like, or don't like, Character X, you're misogynist, homophobic, or stupid". That kind of generalization really bugs me, especially since people love to make stereotypical remarks about Spuffy shippers. There are still people who say Spuffy shippers are rapist apologists, serial killer lovers, or domestic abusers.I think, on the whole, people tend to over-identify with certain characters, and they have to bash anything or anyone that they perceive as a "threat" to their characters. Which is why a lot of Spike fans bash Buffy or SMG, B/A shippers bash Spike, etc. I think a lot of it is group mentality too. If you wanna fit in with a certain part of fandom, you have to hate the same things they hate.Basically, I like to step back with my standard "it's just a tv show!" argument.

I was talking about my two nieces. I don't have kids of my own yet (thank god). :)And yeah, DVDs rock. Daily reruns are good too. It's always easier for me to get into a show when I don't have to wait too long for new episodes.

Exactly. I mean, I can understand being obsessive about things you like, but being obsessive about things you hate kinda makes you look like a loser. ;)
